- Search Tips

-Narrow your search results with the basic search filters
-Further refine your search with advanced search filters

Basic (Home Page Search):

-System will search full and partial image number entries.
-Do not use the numbers sign (#) in an image number search.
-Use a comma and no space, between multiple image numbers.
-When you enter multiple search terms (keywords), if there are no results, try to widen the search by using fewer words (or one word) at first. With those results, add additional keywords and re-run search to get fewer images within your results.
-You must use a comma and no space between terms. System will look for results which include all terms used, and not “either one or the other” (i.e. whales, sperm or whales, birds).
-Use either upper- or low
er-case letters. System will search for both.
-You can enter search terms in singular or plural forms.
-Try typing “-ing” forms for action words, for example: “work” can become “working”.

-Trying nautical phrases, such as “On Deck” (without the quotation marks) may produce results.
-Boolean operators such as "and" and "or" are supported.

-If you are not certain of the spelling of a word or if you would like to conduct a search on just part of a word or phrase, you can use a wild card. Enter the partial word or phrase and follow that directly with a asterik *.

-Keyword search(es) will look in the following categories for matches: category, orientation, original Media, image number, creator or artist, collection in museum, people appearing in image, vessel name visible in image, vessel type visible in image, location or where image takes place, summary, date created, object name, and keywords.

Advanced Search:

-System will search partial word entries, no asterisk needed. The partial word can include either the beginning or the end of the word.
-Enter words in singular and plural forms.
-Keyword search(es) will look in the following categories for matches:
Category, (choose from aerials, animals, buildings, industries, landscapes, marine scenes people, street scenes, or vessels), Orientation (choose from horizontal, vertical or square format), Original Media (choose from drawing, logbook, map, object, painting, photograph or print), Image Number, Creator or Artist, Collection in museum, People appearing in image, Vessel Name visible in image, Vessel Type visible in image, Location or where image takes place, Created between two years, day the image was added to Window Back Gallery, Object Name, and Keywords.
